Staffan Hallström Ingens Hundar

Staffan Hallström first introduced these enigmatic compositions in his paintings under the title ‘Ingens hundar’ (Nobody’s Dogs) in the early 1950s, and they would follow him throughout his life. As one of Sweden’s most cherished painters of the 20th century, his stray dogs have become an icon in Swedish modern art. In 1971 he created a series of mixed media works, as he painted directly onto photographs by Hans André. His recurring dogs now step into a city environment, lost in the car-filled traffic of a Birger Jarlsgatan – as symbols of alienation and the absence of purpose in society.
