Portrait of an 18-week-old human fetus by Lennart Nilsson. This iconic photo crowned the cover of LIFE Magazine, on April 30, 1965. The issue featured his reportage ‘Drama of Life Before Birth’, which showed the human embryo’s development in the womb.

It took Nilsson seven years to complete this remarkable photo series and it became his international breakthrough as a scientific photographer. Later that year the first edition of his book ‘A Child is Born’ was published and became one of the most sold photobooks ever.
